We all know that Alexa and Homepad haven’t had a great success in the smart speaker market just because of its high price and competition. But, now Samsung too wants to enter in the same market by launching its smart speaker, Bixby hoping that it can compete against both of them in the new competitive market. The market for the smart speaker is entirely dominated by Amazon Alexa and Google Home products. However, Samsung may be launching a new smart speaker during the unpacked event on August 9th. This new smart speaker will use the Bixby 2.0, as the newest version of the digital assistant and it is also rumored that it will have the ability to play the audios in the direction of the person talking to it. This speaker comes from the S-Ray concept Samsung presence at CES earlier this year.
According to the reports, The Wall Street Journal primarily talks about the Samsung’s plans for a foldable Galaxy Smartphone, but it pills a bit of information about the speaker too. This device is rumored to cost $300, $50 cheaper than the Homepage, but it is quite more expensive than Amazon and Google’s device. Samsung has already confirmed that as early as February that a Bixby smart speaker was in the works. A new galaxy branded smartwatch could also be unveiled during the aforementioned event. With Amazon and Apple leading the charge and other high profile Software companies such as Apple tries to break into the market with varying degree of success, Samsung also wants a piece of the pie.
The functionality of the Bixby Speaker
The Bixby speaker is one of those rare products which Samsung execs have openly admitted to be working on. But it is also a product which has not been the subject of any leaks or rumors. It is expected to be released sometime in the second half of this year, though according to reports it also has been not suggested that might not happen. But those reports may not entirely be correct, as based on the information we have received that, the Bixby speaker is lariat shaping up to be quite the feature-packed device, as most of the Samsung products usually are. According to the sources, the Bixby speaker is codenamed, Lux. This name looks quite odd, but it might be due to the Bixby speaker because it has a display.
It also has some gesture-based functionality, such as being able to double tap to zoon or flicking to scroll through a list, though that’s about everything we know about this speaker. When it comes to the audio part, the Bixby speaker will be like Google Home but with few extra pieces of functionality thrown in. When the speaker is set up, it will ask the user its preferred music service. The options in it are Spotify and possibly a local Korean music service called melon. Like Google Home, the users will be able to play audio on multiple Bixby speakers at the same time in multiple rooms, with the ability to individuality control volumes for each speaker just to modify the volumes at the same time. Samsung is also creating a feature that would let the user change the direction the sound is played on. In this feature, the user can manually select the sound if the sound should be directed towards the left or right and there is apparently an automatic detection method as well.
